Scholarship awards of $5,000 each have been presented to two Lake Highlands High School (LHHS) seniors in memory of Melinda Lee, a 1992 graduate of LHHS. Both are honor graduates who will attend Texas Tech University this fall.

Marcelo Uribe has received the Melinda Lee Texas Tech Endowed Scholarship. He is a member of the Student Council, the National Honor Society, the president of the Young Conservatives Club and is an active member of the Political Debate Club. Uribe has been the video photographer of the LHHS football team and has been offered a similar position with the Texas Tech football team. He plans to major in political science with a goal of attending law school.

Lydia Biles received the Melinda Lee Memorial award presented through the Exchange Club. She is a member of The National Honor Society and has been captain of the girls softball team. She is also president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was named as Youth of the Month for February by The Exchange Club. Biles is a very active member of the Northwest Bible Church where she is a children’s teacher. She will major in pre-nursing and plans to be a nurse practitioner.

These awards were established by Don and the late Patsy Lee in 1995 to honor their daughter, Melinda, who was killed by a drunk driver in Lubbock in 1994. She was a junior honor student at Texas Tech at the time of her death. Forty-eight LH HS graduates have received these awards to date. Patsy passed away suddenly in June of 2018. She took great pride in making these awards each year and her presence was definitely missed this year. — Don Lee
