Students closing out the year on a high note

Dallas ISD students in fifth- and eighth-grade can be proud of their accomplishments on the first administration of the STAAR, which shows them outpacing the state in nearly every category. Results released by the Texas Education Agency show all math comparisons increased by at least five percentage points. That’s up from last year with double-digit gains at the Meets Performance Level. Reading results showed an impressive increase as fifth-graders posted gains in every performance level, and the greatest growth was at the Meets Level with a 9.2 percentage point increase, while students at the Approaches level gained nearly 7 percentage points.

This is great news for our students, and it shows that all the hard work is paying off. Congratulations, and let’s keep it going.

End of year activity

There’s always a flurry of activity throughout the district as the school year comes to an end, and this year is no different. In District 3 alone, students are wrapping up UIL competitions, preparing for graduation, attending award ceremonies and participating in end of year celebrations. 

Casa View earns

robotics award

The Casa View Elementary Eagles (pictured at left) are flying high after earning the CREATE award at the VEX IQ Robotics World Championship competition in Kentucky last month.

Sanger ES robotics team

Kudos to the Sanger robotics students (pictured below) for advancing to both national and world competition where the two teams ranked 4th and 10th out of 65 teams at nationals. At the world competition, they ranked 28th and 34th in their divisions.

Also, congratulations to the school’s Academic Decathlon teams at Alex Sanger Elementary for earning the number one spot at the Lone Star Challenge.

Movie on the Hill

Robert T. Hill Middle School is hosting Movie on the Hill, at 7 p.m., May 18. The feature movie is “CoCo,” the Disney animated fantasy film that tells the story of young Miguel Rivera who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead. Remember to bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Food will be available for purchase.

Kudos to Conrad High School graduating senior Festus Oyinwola for being selected as a scholarship recipient by the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce Business Development Corporation. Festus was one of 19 students to receive the honor.

Volunteer recognition

Volunteers make a difference, and every year the district recognizes many outstanding people and organizations for their contribution and time in support of students. District 3 volunteer finalists this year include: TD Industries, Daren DeLeon, Debra Vela, Park City Baptist Church, Taylor Shead, Lowe Foundation, Kids in Need Foundation, Omniplan Architects, Leslye Barajas, Mallely Villanueva, Erin Melendez, Deena Martinez Burns, Pedro Garcia, Hardy “Tom” Walker and Joyce Illiya.

Summer Camps

Camps for students currently enrolled in grades 3-7 will take place at Forester Athletic Complex for Bryan Adams feeder pattern and Loos Athletic Complex for Conrad feeder schools. Basketball, football, soccer, track and field and volleyball will be offered. Students can check with their P.E. teachers for more information or to sign up. Remember, the district will close for Memorial Day, May 28, and the last day of school for students is June 1.
