Junius Heights celebrates 120 years!

By Sean McCort

One of Dallas’ most distinctive historic neighborhoods is celebrating a milestone. On Saturday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Junius Heights Historic District (JHHD) invites visitors to explore the neighborhood during its annual Saturday Stroll and Historic Home Tour.

This year’s event marks the 120th anniversary of the 1906 Junius Heights Land Rush, celebrating the neighborhood’s beginnings and the architectural character and community spirit that continue to define it today.

More than a traditional home tour, the Saturday Stroll invites visitors to experience Junius Heights at a leisurely pace — stepping inside historic homes, exploring beautiful neighborhood gardens, enjoying live music on front porches and discovering what makes this East Dallas community special. Food, refreshments and family-friendly activities will add to the festivities. JHHD is seeking docents to help welcome visitors to the homes and gardens.

A special highlight of this year’s Stroll will be the grand opening of the Lipscomb Elementary Garden and Outdoor Learning Space, a project bringing students, families and neighbors together through gardening, education, and community involvement.

“Junius Heights is Dallas’ hidden gem,” said JHHD President-Elect Sean McCort. “With more than 800 homes, we’re the largest historic district in Dallas and boast one of the Southwest’s most remarkable collections of Arts and Crafts, Craftsman, Prairie and Tudor-style architecture. If you’ve never heard of us, this is the perfect time to discover what makes our neighborhood so unique.”

Tickets are on sale now at juniusheights.org. Tickets will also be available on the day of the event for $40 at Garden Café, 5310 Junius Street.
