Career Training Opportunities Growing in District 3 High Schools

As we turn the page to a new and — hopefully — better year in 2021, I’d like to tip my hat to some of the good things going on in District 3 schools. 

First, kudos to staff for the great work being done in the district’s career training education (CTE) programs, especially the offerings at Bryan Adams and Conrad high schools in District 3. Students at both schools have the opportunity to attend classes at their home campus and pursue career interests at one of the new Career Institutes.

Bryan Adams High School students can attend the Career Institute East, where they prepare for high-demand, high-wage careers in the following areas: construction, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, interior design and cybersecurity. In the fall of 2021, the curriculum will expand to add patient care tech and pharmacy tech. 

Emmett J. Conrad High School students can attend the Career Institute North, where they may take courses in the following: construction, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, interior design, mechatronics, aviation, architecture, interior design and cybersecurity.  

Each program provides students with an industry certification for that field and a practicum (work-based learning experience) similar to an apprenticeship. The CTE offerings were chosen based on the need in the local job market.  The training provided for students at both schools is invaluable, as it can lead to internships, industry certifications and credentials. Successful completion of any of these programs is a great opportunity for students to enter a high-demand career and earn a living wage directly after high school.

Choice Schools Application Deadline Extended

The deadline to apply to any of the district’s choice schools or specialty programs has been extended to Feb. 7. The largest STEM EXPO in Texas will be virtual this year 

On Saturday, Jan. 23, Dallas ISD will host our annual STEM Expo, held virtually this year due to the pandemic. The free expo will bring families together to explore, design, build and let their creativity loose. Exhibits will include activities and championships for elementary, middle and high school students and parents. A special feature is a presentation by a team of medical professionals from UT Southwestern who will share information related to the COVID pandemic.
