Dear Editor,
I recently began volunteering with The Borgen Project, a nonprofit dedicated to combating global poverty, and I just wanted to share some simple ways our community can get involved.
One of the most impactful tools we have is our voice; advocacy can drive real change. We are encouraged to regularly contact our elected officials to support programs that protect vulnerable communities.
Our senators, Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, as well as our local representatives, need to hear from us, especially when lives and well-being are on the line. One of the easiest ways to make an impact is by calling their offices and voicing your support for key legislation. Right now, two important priorities include increasing funding for the International Affairs Budget and passing the Global Fragility Reauthorization Act. Both initiatives help lift people out of poverty and address instability around the world.
Of course, this same approach applies to addressing issues here at home, advocacy works at every level. It’s easy to feel powerless, especially in uncertain times. But when we raise our voices together, we can make a difference.
Here are two links where people can learn more about calling and emailing our elected officials.
