Center provides paths to self-sufficiency

North Texas Giving Day season kicked off on Thursday, Aug. 27 and culminates on Thursday, Sept. 17. Communities Foundation of Texas and White Rock Lake Weekly are once again highlighting nonprofits that serve the White Rock Lake area.

North Texas Giving Day uplifts organizations changing lives across North Texas. For Wilkinson Center, it’s helping Dallas families overcome generational poverty and providing paths to self-sufficiency through food assistance, education and workforce training.

After a traumatic car accident forced her out of work, Elizabeth Henry faced an uncertain future. Relying on disability benefits and struggling to provide for her family, she turned to Wilkinson Center’s food pantry for help.

Like Elizabeth, thousands of North Texas residents look to Wilkinson Center during difficult seasons of life. Each year, the nonprofit helps more than 20,000 families facing food insecurity, unemployment, economic instability, limited English proficiency and educational barriers.

The food pantry was just the beginning for Elizabeth. Through Wilkinson Center’s education and workforce programs, she enrolled in a training course and started working toward a career in healthcare.

The path forward wasn’t always smooth. Elizabeth faced twists, detours and roadblocks along the way. Still, whether she needed gas to get across town, scrubs and books for her class or just a shoulder to lean on, Elizabeth always found Wilkinson Center in her corner. With hands-on support from her teacher, case manager and industry partners, Elizabeth persevered in her training. 

The final step was working one-on-one with her Wilkinson Center employment specialist to develop her resume and polish her interviewing skills. Soon, the opportunity she had been working toward became a reality.

Today, Elizabeth works as a phlebotomist at CSL Plasma Centers and is building a brighter future for herself and her family. Her journey began with a need for food assistance but led to something much greater — a pathway forward.

Wilkinson Center attributes its success to individualized programming, intensive case management, a compassionate staff, dedicated volunteers, loyal supporters and a visionary board of directors. All programs and services are free and available to anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or income.

The Center meets families where they are, providing food assistance and support during times of uncertainty. Through its food pantry and mobile Pantry2Go program, the nonprofit gives families access to fresh produce and pantry staples. Helping families move from crisis to stability, Wilkinson Center also connects them with resources such as public-benefits screening, transportation assistance, and financial coaching.

Wilkinson Center believes education can open doors. Through free GED, ESL and workforce training programs, adults gain tools to change the course of their lives. Whether earning a diploma, learning English or preparing for a new career, they take meaningful steps toward a more stable future.

When they’re ready for the workforce, Wilkinson Center helps them turn newfound skills into meaningful careers through one-on-one coaching, resume and interview support, hiring events and career planning.

Like many other nonprofits across North Texas, Wilkinson Center relies on community support to advance its mission. According to the Center, “North Texas Giving Day is a vital opportunity for The Wilkinson Center to engage our community in our mission of providing pathways out of poverty for Dallas families.”

Stories like Elizabeth’s are made possible through generosity. Here’s what a donation can do:

• $50 pays for one week of transportation assistance for a job seeker

• $145 pays for GED testing for an adult learner

• $250 buys 12 cases of diapers

• $500 buys new back-to-school shoes for 15 children

• $1,000 feeds 50 families for a week

• $2,500 prepares 25 people to enter the workforce with computer training and job education

• $5,000 supports one month of programming for 80 adult learners

• $10,000 buys five truckloads of food and essential items for the food pantry

This year, their goal is to raise $45,000 to further expand their impact and help even more neighbors achieve financial self-sufficiency with dignity and respect.
