Deep Ellum murals display global spirit

By Stephanie Keller Hudiburg

As Dallas prepares to host FIFA World Cup 2026™ matches and welcome visitors from around the globe, Deep Ellum is launching a new public art initiative that celebrates the neighborhood’s longstanding identity as a crossroads of cultures through eight new internationally inspired murals. Artists are transforming walls throughout Deep Ellum into vibrant tributes honoring each of the national teams scheduled to play World Cup matches in Dallas.

Representing Austria, Argentina, Croatia, England, Japan, Jordan, the Netherlands and Sweden, the murals will showcase the rich cultural traditions and athletic influences of each nation while adding to Deep Ellum’s renowned collection of public art.

The initiative celebrates both the global spirit of the tournament and Deep Ellum’s historic role as a gathering place where cultures, ideas, art, music, and commerce intersect. Deep Ellum has long been known as a crossroads of culture and the “Soul of Dallas.”

Founded in 1873 where the Houston & Texas Central and Texas & Pacific railroads intersected, the neighborhood quickly became a center for commerce, entertainment and cultural exchange. Deep Ellum grew into a community where Eastern European merchants, African American entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, and immigrants from around the world built businesses, shared traditions, and created spaces where people could gather and experience culture together. That legacy continues today.

For generations, newcomers from around the world have helped shape Deep Ellum’s art, music, business community, and creative identity. The neighborhood’s internationally recognized street art scene stands as a reflection of that ongoing cultural exchange. As Dallas prepares to welcome the world for FIFA World Cup 2026™, these murals celebrate both the participating nations and the spirit that has defined Deep Ellum for more than 150 years: a place where cultures meet, creativity thrives, and all are welcome.

In addition to the murals, artwork inspired by cultures from all 48 teams participating in the World Cup will be featured throughout the Deep Ellum Cultural District, including installations on decorative streetlight poles that further showcase the neighborhood’s global connections and welcoming spirit.
