This past weekend the City of Dallas lost one of its oldest historic landmarks when a 4-alarm fire severely damaged the First Baptist Church sanctuary downtown. Construction of the Gothic brick-and-Palo-Pinto-sandstone building began in 1889, and its first service was held on June 7, 1891. The sanctuary had been in use by the church for over 133 years, making it one of downtown Dallas’ oldest continuously occupied buildings. The photo shows the church as it was in 1895. — Dallas Public Library
