David was a proud graduate of the University of Texas. He was a lifelong fan and attended many UT functions and events throughout his life. He excelled in school, graduating and taking a position with a Big Five accounting firm.
He would go on to earn his CPA degree and then form his own accounting firm. As a skilled and dedicated accountant, David founded and operated his own firm, where his expertise and commitment to his clients earned him the respect and admiration of all who worked with him. His professional success was a testament to his intelligence and perseverance, but it was his generosity, integrity and warm personality that left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
David had a deep love for the outdoors and, in his free time, he could often be found fishing, grilling or on the golf course, where he enjoyed both the challenge and the tranquility of the game as well as the opportunity to socialize with friends and family. His hobbies were a reflection of his easygoing nature and his ability to appreciate life’s simple pleasures. When he needed activity, he would travel with friends to Vegas to enjoy shows and test his gambling skills.
David enjoyed spending time with friends and telling jokes and stories that kept everyone entertained. His desire to be the center of attention came at a young age when he would hold concerts by standing on the hearth of the fireplace and singing in front of his family with a make-believe wooden microphone stand that was hand crafted by him and his mother. When David was in the room, there was never a dull moment.
David’s parents, Robert B. Mickits and Betty Mickits, passed many years ago but he spoke of them often and the valuable lessons that they had taught him over the course of his life. He is survived by his longtime partner, Jill Clay. David and Jill shared many meaningful moments and adventures. Dave often talked about their travels together and the happy memories they made.
Their relationship was one of mutual respect, comfort and companionship. He spoke to his family and friends about the special connection they had and expressed his appreciation for the care and support Jill provided, particularly as his health began to decline. He is also survived by his siblings: Robert D. Mickits and wife Angie, Kevin Mickits and his wife Julie, and Jodi Buzek and her husband Gary. David had a special relationship with his nieces and nephews: Tyler Mickits, Julianna Mickits, Brooks Mickits and his wife, Daniela, Barbara Mickits, Paige Heinrich and her husband Tyson, Robby Mickits and his fiancé Beryl, Jordan Buzek and his spouse Joel, and Taylor Stephenson and her husband Cory. David also left one great niece, Keagan Mickits, and three great nephews, Luke Heinrich, Casey Stephenson and Christopher Mickits.
David will be greatly missed by his many friends, clients and loved ones who were touched by his kindness and good nature. David was generous to a fault, loaning family members money to start their own business, providing bonuses to nieces and nephews for accomplishments and even feeding the homeless on numerous occasions. David offered jobs to many of his nieces and nephews to give them a start after graduating.
David left specific instructions with his family that he did not desire a formal service or celebration of life. Instead of flowers or donations David only requested that those who hear of his passing or read this obituary take a moment and reflect on the importance of friends, family and country. Life is short. Do not waste a minute. He wanted to tell all he had a great life and treasured all who would mourn his passing. According to Dave, “He would not trade a moment in his life and he has a great appreciation for his friends and family who enriched every aspect of his time on earth.” David’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and he will be remembered for his love of life, his dedication to his work and his unwavering friendship.
