In Memoriam — John Christian Beaird

John Christian Beaird, beloved son, brother, uncle, neighbor and friend passed away of natural causes at his home on June 16, 2026. He will be deeply missed by all of us who loved him so dearly.

John was born in Dallas on August 22, 1962 to Sandra Williams Beaird and Vernon Clark Beaird. He grew up in Rockwall and graduated from Rockwall High School in 1981. He went on to attend Baylor University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater in 1985.

After graduation, John spent several years in Dallas and New York City, where he worked with multiple theater companies and performed in a variety of roles. In 1994, he moved to Iowa to pursue graduate studies, earning a Master of Arts in Directing from the University of Iowa. He returned to the Dallas area in 1997 and soon settled in his beloved East Dallas home.

In 2002, John began substitute teaching at Woodrow Wilson High School, and was quickly selected to succeed the school’s retiring theater director. He spent the next 22 years at Woodrow, where, in his own words at his retirement celebration, he “knew he was home.”

During his time at Woodrow, John not only continued the remarkable legacy established by his predecessors, but also created traditions of his own, leaving a lasting mark on the school and its theater program. He worked with and inspired thousands of students, instilling a confidence that they could use not only on the stage, but out in the world.

As much as John absolutely loved his time at Woodrow, he also greatly embraced retirement these past two years. He found joy in many creative pursuits, including woodworking, pottery and gardening. He loved to travel and was endlessly curious about the world, exploring new places, cultures, and histories throughout his life. No matter where his travels took him, he rarely returned home without a special souvenir for his nieces and nephews, who eagerly awaited his return and treasured both the gifts and the stories he brought back with him. His love of plants and gardening recently culminated in him becoming a Texas Master Gardener through the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension program. He was also dearly devoted to his many pets, caring for them with great tenderness and affection.

John is survived by his mother, Sandra Beaird; his brothers Pat Beaird and wife Colleen, Rob Beaird; his sister Beth Carlisle and husband Eric; and his nine nieces and nephews Morgan (David), Brooke (Clayton), Rachel, Alex (Bryana), Nick, Jake, Will, Lauren and Hannah, all of whom adored their Uncle John.

He was preceded in death by his father, V. Clark Beaird, who never missed a single performance of John’s.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Woodrow Wilson High School auditorium on Wednesday, June 24th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Beaird Performing Arts Scholarship Fund, which is currently in the process of being established.
