Thirteen Snipe boats competed at White Rock Lake. Two races on Saturday, Oct. 30 in light wind was followed by a costume party dinner in the clubhouse. Sunday, Oct. 31 offered up two more races with tight competition among the top three places.

Skipper Gene Soltero and Crew Laura Dahl O’Leary reigned in first place and were bestowed the Ted Wells Championship Trophy. Skipper Adrienne Montgomery, a former Corinthian Class local champion, won the top ranked Snipe racing Newcomer award. Dressed as a Viking, David Foster took home the prize for best costume.

Corinthian Sailing Club is home to Dallas Snipe Fleet 001 which currently has a fleet of 10 boats available for members to use for sailing, training and racing. Mariner Sails earned special thanks for sponsoring the Regatta.

The Snipe is a 15-foot-6-inch, two-person International Class racing dinghy sailed in 26 countries around the world. Racing opportunities range from local club regattas to national and international championships.

Class management is through the Snipe Class International Racing Association (SCIRA). Emphasis is on one-design racing and improvement of sailing skills rather than on design breakthroughs.

Skipper David Foster of Dallas was the costume contest winner. He is pictured here with his crew Amy Jones of Fort Worth.

Locally, Dallas Fleet 001 is at White Rock Lake. It is the first ever formed Snipe fleet and is part of Snipe District II, which has eight actively competing fleets throughout the Central Southwest states. Dallas’ fleet has experienced significant growth during 2021 with new members of all ages. Currently, Dallas Snipe Fleet 001 includes a fleet of 12 boats and approximately 60 active fleet members with a complete roster of more than 200 individuals from throughout the DFW metroplex.

The fleet has an active education and training component and invites individuals of skill levels from rank beginner to world class expert to learn about the fleet. If one has never stepped foot on a sailboat but has an interest in learning, they are still welcome. Individuals interested in pursuing racing may submit a membership application.

Training and other events are promoted on Meet Up (meetup.com/Snipe-Class-Sailboat-Racing-Dallas) and on dalsail.com.
