Dallas Mavericks’ guard Jaden Hardy joined children at the Hampton-Illinois Branch Public Library this week for a Mavs Reading Timeout as part of the Mavs Reading Challenge, presented by Whataburger.

Hardy was accompanied by the team’s in-arena host, Chris Arnold, in reading aloud two basketball-themed picture books, “Goodnight Basketball” by Michael Dahl and “Bouncy: The Basketball That Couldn’t Bounce” by Jim and Brenda Jones.

Free copies of both books were provided for kids to read along with, plus everyone at the event received goodie bags from the Mavs and Whataburger. To improve reading literacy throughout North Texas, the Mavericks and Whataburger’s Feeding Student Success initiative are challenging students, grades K-12, to join the program by reading 20 minutes a day through March 8.

All participants who log 20 minutes a day for at least 40 days will receive the Whataburger Certificate of Completion, a free Whataburger Jr. from participating locations, and a Mavs swag bag. The top 20 students who read and log the most minutes during the Mavs Reading Challenge will receive two tickets to a home game, with the top reader also receiving a mascot visit to their classroom, along with Mavs and Whataburger gear. Learn more or sign up for the Mavs Reading Challenge at Mavs.com/Readingchallenge or visit a Dallas Public Library branch.
