New eagle cam livestreams daily activity

By Bryna Thomson

The community can now watch the local eagles Nick and Nora and their eaglets LIVE during daylight hours on WRLeagleTV!

Lake Park Estates neighbors Bryna Thomson and Nancy Daniels have set up a livestream of the nest using a spotting scope, a spare cell phone, WiFi service and a streaming app, which streams to YouTube. While not as high tech (or expensive) as eagle cams on other nests, the set up gives eagle enthusiasts a way to watch and listen to activity at the nest remotely.

In the fall of 2021, the eagle pair began building their first nest at White Rock Lake. Now, the livestream offers a closeup look at bald eagle parenting in action.

The eagle couple is currently raising two, five-week-old eaglets named Dixon and Luka. The names Dixon and Luka were chosen by neighborhood eagle enthusiasts and local photographers who have grown fond of the young birds. The livestream offers a closeup look at bald eagle parenting in action. It has quickly gained popularity as viewers tune in to watch food deliveries, feedings, eaglet wing flaps and “poopies.” At five weeks old, the eaglets are still covered in soft down, but they are already showing signs of the majestic plumage they’ll develop over time. They will be nearly full-sized at around nine weeks old.

“These eagles are a treasure,” said one of the neighbors behind the stream. “We just wanted to share the magic with as many people as possible.”

In the fall of 2021, the eagle pair began building their first nest at White Rock Lake. They experienced two nest failures before settling into their current nest. This is the second year in a row they have raised eaglets in this nest. The addition of the livestream is bringing their story into homes and classrooms across the area.

Experts note that the presence of bald eagles in urban areas is a promising sign of environmental recovery as the species continues to rebound from near-extinction in the lower 48 states.

As Dixon and Luka continue to grow, their fans are watching with anticipation and are eager to witness their first flights, which is expected in about four weeks. Nick and Nora remain vigilant parents, providing food and protection while Dixon and Luka grow stronger by the day.
