Native Plants and Prairies Day shines a spotlight on the critical role played by the North Texas prairies as essential habitats for a diverse array of wildlife, including insects, birds and mammals. This unique ecosystem, characteristic of the ecoregion in Texas, spans from the Red River to the Gulf Coast. However, development has taken its toll, with much of the Blackland Prairie disappearing. Shockingly, the World Wildlife Fund reports that less than one percent of the original Blackland Prairie vegetation remains intact.
