On Sunday, March 28, Dallas United Crew (DUC) traveled to race in the second event of the America’s Youth Cup Series. Competitors included Sarasota Crew, runner-up in the 2019 Youth Men’s 8+, cross-lake rivals Jesuit Crew who placed sixteenth nationally in 2019, and other top crews from the east coast. Racing was suspended for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The venue, Nathan Benderson Park, was built for rowing and regularly hosts World, NCAA and USRowing championships. This June Nathan Benderson Park will likewise host the 2021 USRowing Youth National Championship. “Only one of our athletes competed here in 2019,” says Head Coach Steve Perry, “so this is a great opportunity to build familiarity with the course and see the competition before Youth Nats.” Sunday’s results have Perry feeling optimistic, “With top three finishes by our Varsity boy’s and girl’s crews, we are ready to do the work to face the competition at Youth Nats.” Past this year’s Sprint season, DUC’s future looks bright. The boy’s Freshman 8+ flew to an eight-second, open water win over a field of nine boats. — Katrina Craycroft
