Join SYZYGY, the premiere new music collective of SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts, on Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. for free performances of recent masterworks with two features for SMU’s fantastic brass students. SMU Composition student Jordan Wartell’s “With Cloud, Smoke and Fire” precedes Magnus Lindberg’s “Ottoni,” a tour de force for full orchestral brass section composed for the Chicago Symphony. Italian master Franco Donatoni’s “Arpege” sets the mood for Charles Wuorinen’s “New York Notes,” both works being amongst the finest recent examples of “pierrot” instrumentation. Led by conductor and director George Nickson, with violin contributions from String Department Chair Aaron Boyd, this concert will feature SMU’s fantastic instrumental students as they demonstrate the breadth and depth of these masterworks in the excellent acoustic of Caruth Auditorium, which is located at 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the SMU campus. For more information, call 214-768-2787. The performance will be both in-person and livestreamed; to register to watch online, visit https://bit.ly/SMUMeadowsLive. — From Staff Reports
