Community invited to The Point

By Brian Parman

What do most people picture when someone says the words “Senior Activity Center”? Do they picture older people sitting around playing bingo or card games for hours on end? If that’s the case, they need to update their vision.

The Point at CC Young is a senior activity center located in the center of a beautiful 20-acre senior living campus adjacent to White Rock Lake in Dallas. The Point is having an Open House on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and invites the community to come experience a vibrant, action-packed combination of a local fitness center, a student union on a university campus and a social country club all rolled into one. Dedicated in 2007, The Point features a wellness center with gym and fitness classroom, mediation chapel, café, game zone, art gallery, auditorium, movie theater, classrooms, library and even a television studio.

Members don’t need to be a resident of CC Young or on Medicare to take advantage of all the great opportunities The Point has to offer. They just need to be age 55 or better with a desire to connect with other and live life to the fullest. Point Membership offers so much more than just card games, even though they have those, too. Members can find a place for exercise, learning, fun and friendship. Studies suggest that older adults who participate in activities they find meaningful, such as volunteering in their communities or being physically active, say they feel happier and healthier.

The options for engagement are almost endless. Wellness programming includes traditional classes like aerobics, yoga, Pilates, tai-chi offset by evidenced-based health-based classes such as “Thriving with Parkinson’s Workout,” “The Loud Crowd” and boxing classes designed for Parkinsonians to help them live their best life.

CCY Physical therapist, nurses and nutritionists provide regular workshops such as “Wellness Wednesdays,” “For Your Health” and “Nutrition Talks” to answer questions, share best practices and connect seniors with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease and arthritis the tools and resources needed to reduce their symptoms, eat well and communicate with their doctors.

In 2022 CC Young partnered with the UNT Osher School of Lifelong Learning to provide education experiences simply for the joy of learning for the residents and members. OLLI provides six semesters (spring and fall for three years) of weekly non-credit courses with expert instructors who share their wealth of knowledge with eager adult learners in the classroom, at special events, on local trips and travel opportunities abroad.

From daily workouts to movie matinees, local outings to international travel, the residents and Point members demonstrate that life is better when shared together.

The Point is located at 4847 W. Lawther Dr. in Dallas.
