Local business helps promote literacy

From Staff Reports

Monster Yogurt is excited to announce the launch of its 12th Annual Book Drive, designed to benefit underserved schools in Dallas. This year’s drive will run through the end of February. For every book donated, patrons will receive one free ounce of frozen yogurt as a token of appreciation.

In conjunction with National Education Association’s Read Across America events, all collected books will be distributed to local schools, culminating in another free book fair for students.

Ava Skipworth, founder of Monster Yogurt, initiated this drive shortly after opening the Casa Linda location, fueled by her personal commitment to literacy and education. In 2024, thanks to generous community support, Monster Yogurt was proud to sponsor five Title 1 schools with free book fairs, providing students with access to new reading materials and fostering a love for books.

Skipworth’s own journey with literacy began with challenges related to dyslexia. It wasn’t until high school, with the support of a dedicated teacher, that she completed her first book — a milestone that profoundly shaped her passion for promoting literacy in the community.

In 2024, Skipworth also had the honor of being a keynote speaker at the Regional Conference for the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA), an organization dedicated to upholding high standards in academic language therapy.

The book drive has garnered significant attention from local media, including features on What’s Happening East Dallas Podcast, Fox4 KDFW, 5NBC DFW and WFAA, establishing it as a cherished community event.

In conjunction with National Education Association’s Read Across America events, all collected books will be distributed to local schools, culminating in another free book fair for students.

“The more books we receive, the more schools we can support,” emphasizes Ava Skipworth.

Monster Yogurt encourages everyone to participate in this meaningful initiative by donating new or gently used books at their location. Join them in supporting East Dallas schools and promoting literacy among the youth in the community.
