Local support helps Raptor Center soar

Blackland Prairie Raptor Center is back for Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day! Now in its eighth year of participation, the organization raised more than $17,000 in 2024 to support its conservation and education efforts. This year, they’re aiming even higher, hoping to raise $55,000 thanks to an incredible anonymous match of $20,000. Donations will be doubled and efforts from supporters will reach further.

Inspired by the Blackland Prairie ecoregion, which once covered more than 23,500 square miles of Texas, the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center is passionately committed to preserving and enhancing the rich biodiversity of this unique landscape. Through dedicated efforts in rehabilitation, conservation and education, the organization strives to protect Texas’ ecosystems and the flora and fauna that call them home.

“Funds raised during Giving Day 2024 helped us upgrade training tools for our ambassador birds, enhancing our public education programs,” said Laura Johnson, executive director. “This year, our $55,000 goal will support an additional 100 injured and orphaned birds of prey and help us expand outreach to underserved schools across North Texas.”

Being part of this region-wide fundraising effort reminds the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center team that they’re not alone in their mission. They’re part of a community of passionate individuals committed to making a lasting impact on native wildlife.

An example of the organization’s impact shines in the story of Henley, a juvenile bald eagle, or “eaglet.” After a disastrous storm struck the Dallas region in 2024, Henley was found grounded at White Rock Lake, separated from his nest and family. Once rescued, he was brought to Blackland Prairie Raptor Center for life-saving care. After a successful recovery, the Center (pictured) ensured he had a happy reunion with his eagle parents, Nick and Nora.

“North Texas Giving Day empowers us to come together to keep North Texas skies alive with the beauty of birds like Henley,” Johnson said.
