Summer is nearly here, and soon back-to-school season will be just around the corner. With that in mind, Lochwood Branch Library is kicking off its fourth annual school supply drive, and the library needs the community’s support. During the past three summers, with the support of patrons and community partners, the library collected and distributed much needed school supplies for nearly 300 local students. However, as of last July, an estimated 31 percent of parents in the United States and an estimated 86 percent of students in Dallas struggle to afford necessary school supplies. This is an unfortunate reality of today’s world that, as members of this community, the library staff is asking the community for support to increase the number of students provided with school supplies, ensuring they are fully equipped to meet their educational goals in the year ahead. Donations of school supplies are being collected at the Lochwood Branch Library (11221 Lochwood Blvd.) until July 31. Supplies will be distributed on August 2 at the Back-to-School Community Fair to as many students as possible. Anything donated is greatly appreciated, both by the library and the families of students. Additionally, if neighbors are interested in participating in the Back-to-School Community Fair, either hosting a booth or supporting an activity station, email leeann.sutton@dallas.gov or call 214-670-8403. — LeeAnn Sutton
