Popular Guatemalan restaurant group San Martín opened on McKinney Avenue in the former McKinney Avenue Contemporary gallery space in December. Since then, the team of Guatemalan owners and executives, coupled with new Dallas staff, has worked diligently to transform and translate the concept to English and to Texan.

San Martín Artisan Bakery & Restaurant in Uptown Dallas is the 50th store for this group. Beginning operations in 1974, the concept currently has 41 stores in Guatemala, eight in El Salvador and now one in the United States … with a total of more than 3,000 employees.

“We are excited to have Dallas as the launchpad for our U.S. operations,” Gabriel Castillo, son of founder Andrés Castillo and head of U.S. operations, said. “Spending time here when my brother attended SMU, we fell in love with the city and thought the dining scene presented exciting opportunities. We hope to open additional operations in North Dallas and beyond, perhaps later this year.”

The new San Martín store includes a bakery, pastry shop and restaurant designed in the unique Guatemalan style, that sets SM apart from competitors. Guests can enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, as well as shop for baked goods and pastries, along with mid-morning or afternoon coffee crafted from Guatemalan beans. One-of-a-kind Guatemalan crafts appeal to shoppers as well as diners. All drinks and dishes are prepared in the moment with fresh ingredients.

The group’s Master Baker Leonel Rodríguez, has more than 30 years of experience in the field, and traveled all the way from Guatemala to train each and every one of the bakers in Texas, to show them the right technique of baking artisanal bread, just like they do in Guatemala.

San Martín is located at 3120 McKinney Avenue in Dallas. For more information,  visit sanmartinbakery.com.
