Teens encouraged to ditch the devices

Summer at White Rock Lake is part of life around East Dallas. But there’s something special about being on the lake — not just beside it.

Rowing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and kayaking offer children more than just a way to pass the time. They offer freedom, focus and friendship. And maybe even a little splash of joy they didn’t know they were missing.

Hand a person a paddle — whether it’s to stand up on a board or sit in a boat — and something changes. At first, they’re wobbly, maybe a little unsure. But give it a few tries, and suddenly they’re moving and smiling. They’re not just on the lake. They’re part of it.

Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are easy to learn and fun to explore. Young adults love the independence — being able to move at their own pace, cruise near the shoreline or race their friends. It’s playful and calming at the same time. Great for all levels, even beginners.

Rowing brings a different kind of magic. In a rowing shell, everyone has a role. It’s about timing, teamwork and trying again until the boat moves as one. Team members learn how to work together and glide across the water. Rowing creates community. It’s a sport that builds trust, discipline and confidence, and leaves room for laughter.

The lake provides a break from routines and devices. It’s a reset button. The shy child finds their voice in the boat. The hesitant one learns to push through a tough practice. The competitive one learns how to lead and how to listen.

Most of all, it’s fun. They jump in the boat, excited to practice. Cheer each other on. Come home tired, happy, and ready to go back the next day.

What starts as a week-long camp often turns into something more. One week becomes a season. A new sport becomes a new friend group. The lake becomes their favorite place — not just to visit, but to belong.

And the best part? These aren’t just summer memories. They’re life lessons: resilience, teamwork and a connection to nature that no screen can match. Sign up for a learn-to-row or paddle camp session. Try something new, meet some great people and maybe even discover a lifelong love for the water. Visit the Dallas United Crew website to learn more. Summer camps start on Monday, June 2.
